EPUB Won’t Open on Your Computer? Common Errors and How to Fix Them

Double-clicked an EPUB and nothing happened[cite: 6]? Or imported a book and it doesn’t show up the way you expect[cite: 6]? In this guide we’ll go through the most common problems that stop an EPUB from opening on your computer and how to fix them so you can get back to reading.

Quick checklist

When an EPUB won’t open, most of the time it’s one of these[cite: 6]:

  • The file isn’t really an EPUB (wrong extension or different format)[cite: 6].
  • The file is incomplete or corrupted[cite: 6].
  • The book is still DRM-protected and tied to a specific app or device[cite: 6].
  • The file lives on a disconnected drive or moved location[cite: 6].

1. Make sure it’s really an EPUB file

Some files look like EPUBs at first glance but aren’t[cite: 6]. A valid EPUB should end with .epub and actually be in EPUB format, not just renamed[cite: 6].

  • Check the extension. In your file manager, confirm the file ends with .epub, not .pdf, .mobi, .azw3 or something else[cite: 6].
  • Watch for double extensions. Files like book.epub.zip or book.epub.pdf are usually not valid EPUBs[cite: 6].
  • Don’t just rename other formats. Changing .pdf to .epub won’t magically turn a PDF into an EPUB; it will simply break the file[cite: 6].

Have a Valid File? Open it Reliably Every Time.

If your file is perfectly fine, the problem might be the software you are trying to use to open it. Stop relying on default apps that weren't built for reading.

2. Check if the file is incomplete or corrupted

A broken or partially downloaded file can’t be opened properly by any reader[cite: 6]. A couple of quick checks[cite: 6]:

  • Look at the file size. If it’s 0 bytes or far smaller than you’d expect for a book, the download probably failed[cite: 6].
  • Redownload the EPUB. If you still have access to the original source, download the file again and overwrite the broken copy[cite: 6].
  • Try another EPUB. Import a different, known-good EPUB into Wizread[cite: 6]. If that one works, the issue is almost certainly with the original file, not the app[cite: 6].

3. Make sure the file is actually reachable

If the EPUB lives on an external or network drive, things can break in less obvious ways[cite: 6]:

  • Reconnect external drives. If the file was on a USB drive or external disk, make sure it’s connected and mounted before importing[cite: 6].
  • Keep a stable “Books” folder. Storing EPUBs in a consistent local folder (like Documents/Books) simplifies imports and reduces surprises[cite: 6].

4. Be aware of DRM-protected ebooks

Some ebooks are protected with DRM and are meant to be opened only in specific apps or on specific devices[cite: 6]. Even if the file ends with .epub, DRM can prevent it from working in other readers[cite: 6].

  • Store-locked EPUBs may only open in the official app they were purchased for[cite: 6].
  • Generic converters or readers usually cannot handle DRM-protected files in a way that’s consistent with store terms[cite: 6].

This guide does not cover, recommend or endorse any method of bypassing DRM or ignoring copyright/licensing restrictions[cite: 6].
